Screw elements and kneading blocks for Andritz feed and aquafeed extruders

We make replacement screw elements, kneading blocks, screw shafts, barrel sections and wear liners for Andritz feed, aquafeed and food extruders. Feed duty is where abrasion and corrosion arrive together, so the grade and the clearance matter more than the drawing alone.

We do not publish an Andritz model list. Platform names and generations vary too widely for a list to be reliable, and a wrong list is worse than none — a nameplate photograph settles it in one message.

Why feed and aquafeed are the hard case

Feed extrusion is often described as food extrusion with cheaper ingredients. That is backwards. On wear parts it is the harder duty, because three mechanisms arrive at once and reinforce each other.

  • Abrasion from limestone, mineral premix and bone meal — hard, angular particles that open the flight crest and the bore together
  • Corrosion from salt in marine diets and from acidic inclusions, which pits the surface before it wears measurably
  • Energy load — aquafeed has to reach a specified density and durability, which means high specific mechanical energy held continuously

A pit from corrosion removes the hard case locally. The abrasive particle then has somewhere to start. That is why a feed element often fails earlier than the same element on a food line running similar tonnage.

How wear shows up before the machine stops

On feed and aquafeed lines the first symptom is product, not hardware. Watch for these, in this order:

  • Pellet durability index falling at unchanged settings
  • Bulk density drifting, or the sink rate of aquafeed changing
  • Specific mechanical energy creeping up to hold the same cook
  • Throughput falling — usually last, and usually well after the clearance opened

Because the machine keeps running, the honest way to catch it is measurement: flight crest against bore, at every planned shutdown, recorded. A trend line tells you when to order. A single reading at breakdown tells you nothing except that you are late.

What we make for Andritz lines

  • Conveying screw elements and screw segments
  • Kneading blocks, single-piece and assembled
  • Screw shafts and shaft assemblies
  • Barrel sections, wear liners and liner replacement

On abrasive feed duty the liner frequently reaches its limit before the elements do. Measure both at the same shutdown, or you will replace a screw set into a bore that is already oversize.

Material choice for feed and aquafeed

The grade follows the recipe, not the brand. A poultry feed line and a marine aquafeed line on the same platform will not take the same steel.

Material selection
Product contact, general food duty300-series stainless, nitrided or through-hardened
Product contact, abrasive recipeCorrosion-resistant grade at 58–62 HRC (bone meal, mineral premix, aquafeed)
Non-contact positionsNitrided steel or tool steel as for compounding
Barrel borePolished or plated bore; nitrided, alpha-101, HIP PM or laser-clad liner

What interchangeable actually means

Interchangeable means the element fits the shaft, matches the centre distance and reproduces the conveying geometry, so it can run alongside original parts on the same shaft.

  • Same spline and keyway
  • Same outer diameter and pitch
  • Same stagger angles
  • Can be mixed with OEM parts on one shaft

What to send us

  • A photograph of the machine nameplate — this is the first thing we ask for on Andritz enquiries
  • The position of the worn element on the shaft, or a photograph of the whole screw
  • A photograph of the worn part with a rule in frame, or the OEM part number if it is legible
  • If the bore is suspect, the measured bore diameter and roundness

From those we confirm compatibility and quote before anything is machined.

Frequently asked questions

Which Andritz extruder platforms can you supply parts for?

We supply for the feed, aquafeed and food extrusion platforms we have seen in service. Andritz platform names and generations vary widely, so rather than publish a list that will be wrong for half the enquiries, we confirm from the machine nameplate. Send a photograph of it with your enquiry.

Why do Andritz aquafeed parts wear faster than feed parts?

Aquafeed combines three wear mechanisms that feed alone does not: high mineral and bone-meal loading, salt from marine diets, and the higher specific mechanical energy needed to reach the required density and durability. Abrasion opens the clearance, corrosion pits the surface, and the two accelerate each other.

How do I know when an Andritz screw element needs replacing?

On feed and aquafeed lines the first sign is usually product, not the machine: pellet durability drops, bulk density drifts, or the sink rate of aquafeed changes. By the time throughput falls the clearance has usually been open for a while. Measure the flight crest against the bore at each planned shutdown.

Do you supply wear liners as well as screw elements?

Yes. Barrel sections, wear liners and liner replacement are supplied alongside elements, kneading blocks and shafts. On abrasive feed duty the liner often reaches its limit before the elements do, so it is worth measuring both at the same shutdown.

What lead time should I plan for?

Allow 30 to 45 days once material is available and drawings or measurements are confirmed, plus transit. Liners in a grade not held in stock can take longer, so order against a planned shutdown rather than a breakdown.
